Dogs are always happy because a dog’s purpose is very simply “to do dog well” — they can do dog without thinking, so they're happy automatically. Our problem is that the conscious human mind gets in the way of what would otherwise be automatic happiness.

Thinking gets in the way. Intuition is how we get there. Intuition is ”knowing how to do the right thing at the right time without knowing how” — and, there are lots things that we do that dominate our mental state so completely that they leave no space for the subtle voice of intuition.

My own gradual emergence from depression and towards a greater sense of purpose has been a journey of rediscovering my intuition. My intuition also led me to stop drinking (which was itself the primary reason that my intuition was foreign to me for so much of my life). Especially as men, purpose is at the core of our identity and our well-being, and intuition is the voice (and the only voice) that will speak our purpose.

Some of what has been me in 2019 that I am particularly grateful for. I * Found the clarity to feel my purpose as a writer (and wrote somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 words) * Launched my coaching practice @secondsightcoaching * Gave up a permanent home (for the time being) and went #homefree, traveling through the western U.S. for the second half of the year. * Took my 14-year old ~nephew backpacking in the high Sierra * Participated in my first paragliding competition * Lived 99.99% #alcoholfree and loved it * Gave up a life-long habit of biting my nails * Took a 6+ month hiatus and emotional reset from relationship/dating * Took part in several personal development workshops, writing courses, and retreats * Hosted two editions of my own What Are You Drinking? workshop, along with several other events * Earned my P4 paragliding rating and flew a ton of new sites, including at least one 50km XC flight * Did a bunch of 10mi @ 10,000' runs, and got to summit Mt Whitney! * Became part owner / part of the founding family of Isla Majagual http://majagual.org

I also ended a deeply loving relationship and left our beautiful home for life on the road. I miss her, I miss that home, I miss our togetherness, and choosing to leave was very very hard for me. It's what I felt I had to do, but it was a lonely and painful choice, even as the result was joyful, and not lonely.
Along the way this year I got to spend time with **so many** beautiful friends and family, and felt more than ever before that I can hear my own voice clearly, and that I am living _me_, surrounded by all of you. Thank you all for helping me make 2019 the best year yet. I love you. .

What is money for?
Money is great as grease, but its highest purpose is in exchange for art.
Art is the manifestation of another person’s unique being. Art shows us all what it looks like to be free.
Art isn’t made for money, but we do all need some. Anyone making art is serving us all, and to be free themselves, the artist should be happy.
Exchanging money for art is one of my favorite things to do. I only bargain with artists to pay them more than their asking price.
Also: artists are everywhere. There are many more of us than you probably think. I like to buy art from friends, to keep the money in the family, and also to surround myself with their expression.
This beautiful, colorful, playful painting by my friend @clamlynch is now at home with my dear old friend John Yelding-Sloan’s girls. Their young lives are surrounded by art, and I’m honored to add this piece to their world.

I dreamt of a woman I once knew last night, of meeting her again in a supermarket. She greeted me warmly, like a witch. I saw the same smile in her eyes that I had seen when we first met in that dungeon on Haight street. She embraced me wearing a red sweater, and then moved in for the kill.
Two months on the road—Owens Valley, New York, Tecopa, Ojai, Idyllwild, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Jalama—and I’m now back here in my beloved home city of San Francisco, where winter has begun with two weeks of beautiful Pacific rain. After a month running around the back side of the high Sierra and soaking up the hot springs of the crusty East side, I circled into the deep south of California to pay a visit to old friends there. Along the way I had several synchronous encounters, flew with new friends and was assailed by the road dust and general scuzz of LA and the grey-burnt pall of our state, long past golden in the last of six rainless months of summer. The dry death exhausted me as I drove north through Big Sur. I felt the bleak, featureless haze seeping into the upper layers of my soul, and I longed for relief.
As a California native, I know from experience that the rain should come, and that it may not. The forecast is always grim as we wait. El Niño or La Niña, a dry winter—or will the “storm door” open? I knew the time was right to head north. I didn’t get my hopes up, but I have no particular reason to be here other than to visit my home and wait for the hills to turn green again.
There is no other city like San Francisco. It’s not the clattering garbage trucks, the traffic to constantly weave and dodge, the trash smeared in the alley.
It’s the light in the sky in the evening, the salt-washed and ever-changing air, the views of secrets hidden in the angles and coves of the city built on so many hills. Every corner has a bit of gold dust settled in fines of bay mud. ...continued in comment ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Nothing says “welcome home” like a late November skatepark session on the Pacific side of my bridge.
I had a short hour out there and then the wind began to swirl in that spooky way that it does right before it dies—and my friends had already headed in. It took all of my hard-won Crissy kite and foil skills to make it back and land my 6.2m @boardridingmaui Cloud dry on the beach. .

Here’s an expression that I think we could do without: the bucket list. You know what? Fuck the bucket list.

The “bucket list” is an invocation of death—a calling-in of the once-before-I-die. “When we fear death, we fear living.” (Harry A. Wilmer, Practical Jung)

It turns out that everything in life is a practice. You get good at what you do, and you are those unique things that you do most often—not the things that you’ve only touched once.
Practicing doing things just once is a good way to get good at nothing—and to become nobody.
On the other hand, when you learn something through repeated practice, the meat of your brain grows, and those neural connections quite literally make what you do part of who you are.
So, forget the bucket list, and the once-in-a-lifetime experiences. If you want to be somebody, practice what you love, and let those things become who you are. .
